Powering your EV journey at home
Welcome to Aircon M8, your Gold Coast specialists for efficient and safe EV charger installations. Discover how our dual-trade expertise ensures a seamless setup for your electric vehicle.
Why choose Aircon M8 for your EV charger installation?
The electric vehicle revolution is well and truly here on the Gold Coast. Whether you’ve just picked up a Tesla, a BYD, or a Hyundai Ioniq, one thing becomes clear very quickly: relying on a standard three-pin wall socket for charging is a recipe for frustration.
Installing a dedicated home EV charger isn't just about convenience or speed; it’s about electrical safety and protecting your home's infrastructure. At Aircon M8, we specialise in professional EV charger installations that bridge the gap between high-tech transport and safe domestic power.
As a dual-trade professional (Electrical and Refrigeration), I look at your home as a complete ecosystem. An EV charger is the single highest-drawing appliance most people will ever add to their switchboard. You wouldn't trust a "handyman" to re-wire your mains, and you shouldn't treat EV charging any differently.
Safety and compliance
Your safety is our top priority. We guarantee all installations meet strict Australian electrical standards, providing peace of mind and protecting your home and vehicle.
Reliable and efficient
We install top-quality EV chargers designed for durability and fast charging, ensuring your electric vehicle is always ready when you are.
Why a Standard Power Point Isn't Enough
Most EVs come with a "granny cable", a portable charger you can plug into a standard 10A socket. While it works in an emergency, it has significant drawbacks:
- Excessive Heat: Standard sockets aren't designed to run at maximum capacity for 12+ hours straight. This can lead to melted plastic, scorched sockets, and fire risks.
- Glacial Speeds: You might only gain 10–12km of range per hour.
- Zero Smart Features: You can’t easily time your charging for off-peak rates or solar excess.
The Solution: Level 2 Fast Charging âš¡
A dedicated Level 2 wallbox installation is the gold standard for Gold Coast homes. These units are hard-wired directly to your switchboard on a dedicated circuit.
- 7kW (Single Phase): Provides roughly 40–50km of range per hour of charge.
- 22kW (Three Phase): If your home has three-phase power, you can triple that speed (provided your car’s onboard charger supports it).
Safe and Compliant Installation: The Technical Reality
When I walk onto a site for an EV charger quote, I’m not just looking at where the box goes on the wall. I’m looking at your Maximum Demand.
1. Switchboard Capacity Assessment
Your home has a limited "bucket" of electricity it can pull from the grid. If you have the oven on, three aircons running, and then plug in a 7kW EV charger, you risk blowing your service fuse.
The Fix: I perform a full load assessment. If your board is outdated, we may need a switchboard upgrade to handle the new load safely.
2. Dedicated Circuit Protection
Under Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000), an EV charger must be on its own dedicated circuit. It also requires a specific type of RCD (Residual Current Device), usually a Type B or a Type A with 6mA DC detection, to protect against DC leakage that can occur during vehicle charging.
3. Cable Selection and Voltage Drop
We don't use standard "off-the-shelf" thin wiring. We use heavy-duty cabling sized correctly for the distance between your board and the charger. This prevents energy loss (voltage drop) and ensures your charger operates at 100% efficiency without the cables getting hot under the collar.
The Aircon M8 Process: What to Expect
I believe in clear communication and expert advice. When you book an installation with Aircon M8, you aren't getting a subcontractor; you're getting the owner-operator who cares about the result.
- Site Consultation: We look at your switchboard, the distance to the garage or driveway, and your WiFi signal strength (for smart chargers).
- Customised Quote: You get upfront numbers with no hidden "gotchas."
- Physical Installation: I mount the unit, run the dedicated conduit/cabling, and install the necessary safety switches.
- Testing & Commissioning: I use specialised testing equipment to simulate a vehicle connection and ensure the safety earthing is perfect.
- The Handover: I’ll help you set up the app on your phone so you can start tracking your energy usage immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does installation take?
Most standard installations take between 3 to 5 hours, depending on the distance between your switchboard and the charging location.
Do I need to upgrade to Three-Phase power?
Not necessarily. A 7kW single-phase charger is usually more than enough for overnight charging. However, if you have a massive daily commute or multiple EVs, we can discuss a three-phase upgrade.
Can I install the charger myself?
No. In Australia, it is illegal and extremely dangerous to perform your own electrical work. You must have a Certificate of Compliance (COES) issued by a licensed electrician to ensure your insurance remains valid.
What if my charger is outside?
We only install chargers with an appropriate IP rating (weatherproofing) for Gold Coast conditions. We ensure all external conduit is UV-stabilised to prevent cracking and water ingress over time.
